Benefits of Aloe Vera

General properties of Aloe Vera

  • Aloe vera is a natural product derived directly from the plant’s leaves. Aloe vera is so effective in its natural state that no compelling reason has been found to spend the time and the enormous sums of money necessary to develop a synthetic version. In fact, Aloe vera is so chemically complex that would make it extremely difficult to synthesise.
  • Scientific researchers have determined that Aloe vera is an amazing mixture of more than 200 constituents, including polysaccharides (a complex carbohydrate), enzymes (complex proteins), glycoproteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Empirical proof now exists to validate Aloe’s ability to reduce inflammation, speed the healing of wounds, ameliorate pain, improve vascular flow and reduce scarring.

Benefits of Aloe Vera to the Skin

  • Pain Inhibitor :- Aloe Vera reduces pain upon application to the affected areaред Unlike the majority of other products available, it has the ability to penetrate deeply. Aloe-Vera blocks pain in the deep layers of skin due to its active components their power to penetrate and ease inflammation.
  • Anti-inflammatory-Anti-allergenic :- Aloe works in a way similar to steroids, like cortisone, but without the harmful side effects. Several elements in aloe are responsible for these actions. Anthraquinones and salicylates the same anti-inflammatory and pain killing agents found in aspirin.
  • Healing Action :- The high levels of Calcium, Potassium and Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin E accelerate the healing process. These minerals promote the formation of a net of fibres that trap the red corpuscles of the blood, thus speeding the healing process.
  • Keratolic Action :- This is the action of removing damaged skin, replacing it with new skin cells. It also allows the free flow of blood through the veins and arteries, clearing them of small blood clots.
  • Antibiotic Action :- ( Antimicrobial activity ) It has been proven to stop of many bacteria such as Salmonella and Staphylococcus that produce pus
  • Cell Regeneration :- Due to the presence of Calcium in Aloe which regulates the amount of liquid in the cells, internal and external equilibrium is maintained. This creates healthy cells in all body tissues.
  • Rehydration of the Skin :- Aloe penetrates deeply and restores lost liquids. It also repairs damaged tissue burns and sunburns. Studies have been done to show that applied Aloe vera gel does not only speed the healing process from a sunburn, but it will also help restore the immune system to normal functioning after it has been compromised by sunburn.

Supporting Research on Aloe Vera Gel

a) Wound Healing

Aloe aided 18 people who had facial dermabrasion (sending away scars). Researchers applied the usual wound dressing on one side of each face, the same dressing soaked in Aloe gel on the other.

Aloe’s advantages: less swelling after 2 days, less crusting by day four and 90% skin regrowth by day six, compared to only 40%-50% on the Aloe-free side. Aloe appeared to reduce throbbing although it stung when applied. The researchers calculate that Aloe speeded up overall wound healing time by three days.

According to Dr. Varro Tyler, Ph.D., a professor of pharmacology at Purdue University, “Evidence seems to indicate that something in Aloe vera inhibits the action of brandykinine, a peptide that produces pain in injuries like burns. It also inhibits the body’s production of thromboxanes, chemicals detrimental to wound healing.

b) Healing sunburn and restoring the immune system

A study had indicated that topically applied Aloe vera gel may also not only speed healing from sunburn, but also restore the immune system to normal functioning when it has been compromised by sunburn. The work of Dr. Faith Strickland of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas suggests the possibility that Aloe vera can not only stop the damage done to the immune system, but can actually restore the system to full working order.

c) Antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties

Other studies in progress also suggest that Aloe vera has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties; can control itching by inhibiting histamine reactions produced by insect bites and stings as well as the body’s reaction to poison ivy and poison oak.
